Drayton’s Breach skill was deafening.

The explosion against the archway ripped through the air, a high-pitched whine and concussive thud that did a pretty decent job of re-souping my brain.

Unsurprisingly, the wall of the warehouse buckled under the force, crumbling like dried bones as smoke and debris sprayed out in a wave. Steel beams curled inward, glowing white-hot at the edges where the blast had cut them like butter.

We’d decided not to go for ‘subtle’ here.

Dust covered everything, a thick, choking mass that rolled out from the opening we’d blown in the warehouse wall. It settled on us like ash from a funeral pyre. But this was no time to worry about the dangers of second-hand smoke. This was it.

Rachel was the first through—of course, she was. Why let the Sentinel with the fucking tank armour lead the way, eh? Charging into the fight with beams of purple energy spewing from her rifle.

Flash after flash of light poured out from her as she ran, and broken waves of Gehenna were left in a sparking heap. Pieces of their malformed, mechanical bodies scattered across the ground, wires and flesh torn apart by her salvo.

Delphina went in next—I’m brave, I’m not stupid—and I followed close behind her, my stave humming as I darted past the smoking ruins of the breach.

The British soldiers surged forward with us, their boots pounding the ground, their shouts mingling with the growing roar of the Gehenna swarm within.

Hell had officially come to SE18.

The inside of the warehouse stretched out before us like an industrial-organic hellscape, the high ceilings draped with chains and cables, sparks dancing between the rafters as machinery ground away relentlessly.

I saw the familiar platforms with the orbiting rocks, but ignored them for now. Because from every corner, the Gehenna came.

I knew the Aetherion called them the ‘swarm’, but I had not really seen them behave like that before. Even in Paris, where there had been lots of them, there had been nothing in a configuration I would have been comfortable in calling a ‘swarm’.

Well, here goes my ‘swarm’ virginity...

There were hundreds of them—thousands of the little bastards—their twitching, biomechanical bodies moving with inhuman speed, metal appendages clanking against the ground as they rushed forward to attack us.

Rachel didn’t hesitate. She cut down two, three, four in rapid succession, the beams of her rifle searing through their flesh and metal, leaving only smoking remnants behind.

To my left, Delphina was already driving forward to get into the thick of it, her massive Aetherion sword slicing through anything that got too close. The blade was longer than she was tall, but she wielded it with simply awesome efficiency, her movements a balletic blur as heads, arms and torsos went flying in every direction.

I bet she was dynamite in bed.

"Move! Move!" Ashcroft's voice cut through the din, his tone still calm despite everything going on around us. "Time to make it count, ladies and gentlemen!"

His orders were timely.
